Autonomic Neuropathy


Autonomic Neuropathy is a condition that can affect the autonomic nervous system which controls the heart, bladder, lungs, stomach, intestines, eyes and sex organs. Autonomic neuropathy can affect the nerves in these areas diabetic is suffering from this complication. This complication of diabetes in most cases effects diabetics that have had problems controlling their blood glucose for many years.

The symptoms that are associated with autonomic neuropathy can include:

  • hypoglycemia, that diabetic is unaware of, which is a low blood sugar level
  • increased or decreased sweating
  • problem blood pressure and heart rate sharp drops in blood pressure when standing from sitting or lying down in the mid-diabetic feeling lightheaded.
  • Difficulty regulating body temperature
  • Eye difficulties adjusting from light to dark
  • increased heart rate while resting
  • bladder problems that include urinary tract infections or urinary incontinence
  • constipation or uncontrolled diarrhea
  • gastroparesis, which is slow stomach emptying that can lead to nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Vaginal dryness and sexual difficulties
