Caffeine and Diabetes

Caffeine is one of the stimulants that many people use daily to stay alert, to wake up and is in many types of drinks like coffee, tea and even some sodas.  The person with diabetes needs to watch their caffeine intake especially when their blood sugar level is not under control.

Caffeine can cause dehydration because it works in the body the same as a water pill would if taken, and this means it increases the output of urine. In a person with uncontrolled blood sugar it can cause dehydration for that reason, which can be a dangerous condition and cause further drop in the blood glucose level.

Caffeine also is a substance that can raise the blood pressure level and while it might not raise it to a dangerous level, when combined with uncontrolled blood glucose values it can become a problem for the person with diabetes. These reasons should be taken into consideration by the diabetic prior to drinking beverages with caffeine rather than beverages that are decaffeinated.
