What can Cause Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic Ketoacidosis is one of the complications that can occur with Type I and Type II diabetics and while it is serious there can be certain factors that can cause the condition to occur. This is a condition where the body is not provided with enough insulin and the blood sugar rises causing toxic acids to be produced.

Illness where an infection is present can cause the body to produce certain hormones like adrenaline, which works against insulin. This is common with illness such as pneumonia or urinary tract infections and high fevers.  It can also occur when there are missed insulin treatments or the insulin therapy that is being used is inadequate.

There are some other things that can cause diabetic ketoacidosis to be triggered, like stress, physical or emotional trauma, surgery, heart attack, stroke and drug or alcohol abuse.
