Sick Days for the Child with Diabetes

Every child suffers sick days, going to school ensures that they will get coughs, colds, flu and virus and what is important is the child that has juvenile diabetes must be monitored closely. This is because illness can make the blood sugar rise and fall to dangerous levels.

One of the important things that parents should be aware of is that it is not always safe to use over the counter medications that they might use for other children in the family, this is because many medications are made to taste better with the use of sugars. When the child that is a diabetic gets ill then it is time to speak to the doctor about the types of medicine that is safe to use along with insulin and the blood glucose level.

There are also special diets the child should have while ill, which includes 50 grams of carbohydrates every three to four hours. The blood glucose may need to be checked as often as every two or three hours, and the urine ketones checked as often as every four hours.
