Complications of Diabetes

There are many complications that can occur when living with diabetes; this can include skin problems, problems with the teeth and gums, digestive difficulties and sexual dysfunction. These complications along with others can happen even if the diabetic is managing their blood glucose level.

For some diabetics the complications are because they have diabetes, while other conditions are due to underlying medical conditions that are not being treated. These underlying medical conditions that can cause complications for the diabetic are called secondary medical conditions and it is important to promptly have these conditions diagnosed and treated. The treatment of these conditions can help the diabetic avoid other complications that can include nerve damage, blindness, heart disease and other health problems.

Some medical conditions can be avoided or minimized simply by improving the blood glucose level and keeping it under control, along with medication or the underlying illness. When this is done the person living with diabetes will be able to avoid some of the complications that can occur.
