Complications Caused by Diabetic Ketoacidosis

There are some complications that can be cause by diabetic ketoacidosis, which are treated with fluids, electrolytes and insulin.  This is a serious complication of diabetes and needs treatment, just as these complications will need to be treated or they can turn into an extremely serious part of having diabetes, and can even be life threatening.

Low blood sugar can occur, even though insulin is being taken to regulate the blood sugar it can drop too quickly. This is a complication that with frequent blood glucose testing and contact with the physician can be kept under control. This is known as hypoglycemia caused by diabetic ketoacidosis.

Low potassium can occur when the fluids used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis cause the potassium level to drop to low. This can be life threatening as it can cause impairment of the heart, muscles and nerves. This is known as hypokalemia and can easily occur with the diabetic complication of ketoacidosis.

Swelling of the brain is something else that can occur due to diabetic ketoacidosis, from adjusting the blood sugar level to fast. This is one of the symptoms that can occur in children that have been newly diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.
