Dental Care and Diabetes

Dental care is important for everyone, and lack of dental care can affect the entire body including heart health. It is even more important for the person with diabetes, as the inability to control blood sugar can lead to oral health problems.

The oral health problems associated with diabetes can include gum inflammation, a burning mouth or tongue, which is due to thrush, and other difficulties.

Oral care is important both at home and regular dental visits for the diabetic to avoid complications that are caused by a combination of the diabetes and the dental problems. This can even be dangerous for the diabetic as infection in the mouth can become a reason for decreased or elevated blood sugar levels that might not be able to be brought back into the normal level without medical and dental treatment.

The only way to avoid oral complications with diabetes is to have a good oral care program that includes regular visits to the dentist.
