Diabetes Insipidus Explained

Diabetes instpidus is a disorder where there is an abnormal increase in the urine output, fluid intake and unquenchable thirst. This is not the same type of diabetes known as sugar diabetes, which is medically referred to as diabetes mellitus. This has  similar symptoms, of increased thirst and urination, but is caused and treated differently.

Diabetes insipidus is divided into four types; each has different causes and is treated differently. The first type is caused by the lack of vasopressin, a hormone that acts in the kidneys to reduce urine output. The second type is pituitary diabetes insipidus, which can also be known as central or neurogenic diabetes insipidus. The third type of this disease is nephorgenic diabetes insipidus, and can be the result of medications, kidney disease or heredity. The fourth type is primary polydipsia and is caused by an abnormality in the brain that regulates thirst.

There are some risks with this type of diabetes including dehydration, loss of consciousness, severe hydration which can cause brain damage and death.
