Diabetes Ketoacidosis In-depth

Diabetes Ketoacidosis is one of the serious complications of diabetes and develops when the body has two little insulin, and the sugar or glucose cannot enter the cells to provide the body with energy. This causes the blood sugar level to rise and the body begins breaking down fat for energy, which produces toxic acids known as ketones.

This is a condition that is common in people who have Type I diabetes, but it can also develop in people with Type II diabetes. In some cases this condition is one of the first signs that will lead to the diabetes diagnoses.

When diabetic ketoacidosis is left untreated the toxic acids that are produced can cause the person to lose consciousness and can even be fatal if not treated.  There are warning signs of this condition that include:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Frequent urination
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • A fruity scented breath
  • Abdominal pain
