Adding Medical Professionals to the Diabetes Management Plan


Having a diabetes management plan is important if the diabetic is going to keep their blood glucose under control and to avoid the complications that can happen because of diabetes. The medical professionals that the diabetic should visit regularly is the family physician that monitors the everyday diabetic symptoms, the dietician that ensure the proper diet is eaten to control blood sugar level and for optimum health.

The other doctors that should be seen regularly are the optometrist and the opththaomologist, these are important specialists to see as the poor circulation that can accompany diabetes can affect the blood vessels in the eyes. Over time if the eyes are not properly treated the diabetic can suffer retinal detachment and eventually blindness.

The podiatrist is also a specialist that should be seen, this is a doctor that cares for the feet and nails, which can be a problem area for the diabetic because this is an area that can become infected easily, there can be problems cutting the nails and the skin can split open.

The diabetic that has their diabetic plan in place, monitors their blood sugar often and sees the necessary physician, eye specialists and podiatrist regularly can reduce complications associated with diabetes by:

  • Reduce amputations by 1,000 per year
  • Reduce kidney disease by 56 percent
  • Eye disease is reduced up to 76 percent
  • Death from diabetes up to 33 percent
