There are different types of diabetes medications, and each has a different function and some are taken orally, while others are taken by injection. Each is the same in one respect, they all have one main function and that is to keep the blood glucose level normal in the body as much of the time as possible.
- Sulfonylureas: this is one of the diabetic medications that is used to help produce more insulin in the pancreas and is taken with a meal in order to work properly in the body.
- Meglitinides: is a medication that is taken prior to eating and is used to help the pancreas produce more insulin.
- Biguanides: this is a medication that is used to help stop the production of excess glucose in the liver and is taken with a meal.
- Alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitors: this medication should be taken at the beginning of a meal where carbohydrates will be eaten. As the carbohydrates are digested into the intestines this medication helps to level and steady the amount of glucose in the blood in a slow manner rather than hitting the blood system at once.
