Some of the very common type 1 diabetes risk factors are:
- Hereditary factor: If your parents have type1 diabetes then you have increased risk of developing the disease.
- Genetics: The presence of certain genes also results in type 1 diabetes.
- Geography: The occurrence of type 1 diabetes also depends on the environment; if you travel away from the equator you have increased risk for diabetes. People living in places like Venezule, Finland and Sardinia have the highest incidence of type 1 diabetes than people in US.
Other risk factors for type 1 diabetes are:
- Low vitamin D levels. Research report says that vitamin D is shielding against type 1 diabetes. So avoid early morning cow milk which is rich in vitamin D.
- Viral exposure. Contact with or more exposure to certain virus such as Epstein-Barr virus, mumps virus or cytomegalovirus, coxsackievirus may directly infect the islet cells or activate the autoimmune destruction of the islet cells.
