Type 1 diabetes risk factors


Some of the very common type 1 diabetes risk factors are:

  • Hereditary factor: If your parents have type1 diabetes then you have increased risk of developing the disease.
  • Genetics: The presence of certain genes also results in type 1 diabetes.
  • Geography: The occurrence of type 1 diabetes also depends on the environment; if you travel away from the equator you have increased risk for diabetes. People living in places like Venezule, Finland and Sardinia have the highest incidence of type 1 diabetes than people in US.

Other risk factors for type 1 diabetes are:

  • Low vitamin D levels. Research report says that vitamin D is shielding against type 1 diabetes. So avoid early morning cow milk which is rich in vitamin D.
  • Viral exposure. Contact with or more exposure to certain virus such as Epstein-Barr virus, mumps virus or cytomegalovirus, coxsackievirus may directly infect the islet cells or activate the autoimmune destruction of the islet cells.
  • Diet factors. Including more cereals into a baby's diet may increase the risk of type 1 diabetes. There are some fatty acids which provide protection against type 1 diabetes such as Omega-3 fatty acids. Drinking more water that rich in nitrates may result in development of disease.
