The Importance of Diabetic Foot Care

Diabetic foot care is extremely important and the person that is diagnosed with diabetes should visit the podiatrist regularly. The reason foot care is so important is because diabetes can cause nerve damage and this damage can occur in the feet and not be detected, the medical name for this is peripheral neuropathy. Another thing that can be caused by diabetes is poor circulation to the extremities; this includes the feet and toes.

Cutting the fingernails or toe nails when diabetic can be dangerous, if the nail is cut to short or skin is clipped it can cause infection as the person with diabetes often has a difficult time healing wounds. This is due to poor circulation and the slow response the body has to fight infection.

There are also some complications associated with diabetes like heart disease and kidney disease that can cause the body to be at higher risk for poor circulation and for a slower healing process, which can result in infection.
