Type 2 Diabetes and Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis has become one of the major problems in people suffering from type2 diabetes and this phenomenon may lead person to go in coma thereby resulting in death. When the glucose does not reach the cells of the body they do not get sufficient amount of energy as a result the body starts burning deposited fat to get energy thereby promoting the production of ketones.

When the body lacks insulin, ketones are built in the blood and they are thrown out of the body in urine. Production of high amount of ketones is dangerous for the body and it is an indication that the diabetes is not under controlled. When there is a high amount of ketones, diabetic ketoacidosis is developed in the body which is also known as DKA.

People suffering from diabetes are at higher risk of developing ketoacidosis in their body but it is rarely seen in people affected with type 2 diabetes. Studies have shown that older people experience a phenomenon known as hyperosmolar nonketotic coma wherein body wants to throw excessive sugar formed in the body through urine. Increased thirst, production of high amount of ketones and sugar levels, feeling shortness of breath are some of the symptoms experienced by people suffering from ketoacidosis due to diabetes type 2.
