Effective Treatments for Retinal Detachment

The only effective treatment for retinal detachment is surgery, and this can include different types of surgeries. Not having surgery as a treatment for retinal detachments will mean permanent loss of vision or when medical treatment is not done immediately.

Laser surgery is one option; this is done with the use of a laser beam through a contact lens known as an ophthaloscope. This is a tool especially designed for laser surgery and is used to make burns known as welds around the retinal tear. The scaring or welds will in most cases weld the retina to the underlying tissue.  The benefit of this type of surgery means there is no need for a surgical incision, which means less irritation and a lesser chance of infection.

Crtopexy is another choice for retinal detachment; this is done by freezing the retina around the retinal tear. The eye surgeon will use a local anesthetic to num the eye and then use a freezing probe around the outer surface of the eye and directly over the retina. This will leave a scar where the tear is to help secure the retina to the underlying tissue or eye wall.
