Gestational diabetes and breast feeding

Gestational diabetes is a disease in which the breast feeding worsens the symptoms of the disease which may result in further complication. However breast feeding is very much required for the healthy life of the child. A breast feeding woman having gestational diabetes is expected to monitor her diet and lifestyle to keep the disease under control.

Some of the women suffering from the condition are seen to improve the condition during the lactation period. This is possibly because the body starts adjusting naturally to the metabolic and the physical changes. A breast feeding woman having the condition needs less insulin as compared to her requirement during the pregnancy period. After gestational diabetes it is seen that the baby is at high risk of suffering from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level), hyperbilirubinemia (physiological jaundice) and various metabolic abnormalities. Frequent and early breast feeding is required to prevent or minimize these diseases. Research shows breast feeding help a child to avoid TYPE 2 diabetes in the later stages of life.

Breastfed child tends to have better glucose metabolism and less insulin resistance. Gestational mothers are said to have good chances having of higher blood lipids, impaired glucose tolerance. Researchers have found out that breast feeding women are able to avert these situations as compared to non breast feeding ones.
