Gestational diabetes prevention:

Gestational diabetes cannot be prevented to full extent in some cases. Although there are various ways in through which it can be lowered to considerable extent. One of the best ways to prevent it from occurring is to stay at healthy weight. Breast feeding is another method as it results in weight loss and reduced insulin resistance.

The reason behind this is that lactose the only available carbohydrate in the milk requires glucose for synthesis. Thus the excess of glucose is used up in that process and avoids it from getting converted into fat. If a woman has had gestational diabetes in the past she must avoid the intake of medicines containing nicotinic acid and glucocorticoid which increases the insulin resistance. One must also avoid the intake of birth pills having only progesterone, instead should opt for birth control pills that contain a low dose combination of both estrogen and progesterone.

Nursing mothers are expected to drink 8 cups of water/day and at least one cup of water each time they breast feed. One can prevent or at least reduce the severity of gestational diabetes through the use of proactive nutrition and exercise. However there are mixed responses that careful attention to nutrition can reduce the risk.
