What is gestational diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes affecting pregnant women. It is caused as the hormones that are produced during the gestation period reduce the woman’s receptivity to insulin thereby leading in high blood sugar levels. Figures say that about 4% % of pregnant women get affected with the disease.

A women being diagnosed for the gestational diabetes during pregnancy may not have been diagnosed for the same ever before. A pregnant woman may be advised to take two to three times more insulin than normal intake so that the glucose in the blood can be transformed into energy. It generally shows only few symptoms and hence must be diagnosed through screening. The diagnostic tests generally show high blood sugar level. As the body is not able to use the insulin the condition is said to be insulin resistance.

Babies that are born to women suffering from the disease suffer from good number of health risks that include low blood sugar level, jaundice and problems in breathing. Gestational disease can be treated and women having good control on the glucose levels can effectively decrease the risk. During pregnancy a woman must take utter care of her diet and should also try to perform less stressful exercise.
