Insulin Shock—What it is

Insulin shock is something that people hear about, but do not always know just what it is and what it means to the person that is a diabetic. When a diabetic risks going into insulin shock it is due to their blood sugar level being extremely low. There are many reasons that this type of illness can strike someone with diabetes.

  • Missing a meal can cause the blood sugar to dip
  • Over taking insulin
  • Doing an extreme amount of exercise
  • Certain medications can cause the blood sugar to be low
  • Having a virus or illness that causes vomiting or diarrhea

Diabetics can also go into insulin shock for unknown reasons, and this is a condition that needs immediate treatment as it can be a dangerous situation. The treatment for insulin shock might be done at home, however in some cases the diabetic will need to be taken to the hospital emergency room by means of an ambulance if they do not respond to treatment at home.
