Dipsogenic Diabetes Insipidus

Dipsogenic diabetes inspidus is also known as primary polydipsia and is usually caused by an abnormality in the brain. The part of the brain the abnormality is located regulates thirst and in many cases it is difficult to diagnose this type of diabetes from pituitary diabetes insipidus. One of the ways this type of diabetes can be diagnosed is to measure the vasopressin made in the pituitary gland by fluid deprivation.

This is one of the types of diabetes that can result in fluid intoxication, which is associated with headaches, nausaea, loss of appetite, and lethargy. One of the other things it is known for is an abnormal decrease in the plasma sodium concentration in the body, which is hyponatermia.

While this type of dpsogenic diabetes can be treated, if it is due to psychosomatic causes rather than those of primary polydipsia then it is called psychogenic polydipsia. This type of primary polydipsia is not treatable presently, but research is being done to find a treatment.
