Oral diabetes medication is prescribed for some diabetics to help control blood sugar level and is usually prescribed to those patients whose bodies still produce a certain amount of insulin. This patient is a type II diabetic and the reason that diabetes pills are able to help control their blood sugar level is because while there body may make insulin it does not make enough to move the glucose cells. The body's cells can also become resistant to insulin and the diabetic pills are able to help to control the blood glucose level in the situation.
It is possible that the type II diabetic will not always be able to take diabetes pills and at some point will need insulin injections. This occurs because they can develop what is known as beta cell failure, with this means is that the pancreas is no longer releasing insulin that the body uses to regulate blood sugar levels. |
