Oral Surgery and Diabetes

Oral surgery can be serious for anyone, and the risk of infection is present, however when the person is diabetic it raises the risk factors. The first of these factors is that people with diabetes that do not have their blood glucose level under control. The person with uncontrolled diabetes, whose blood glucose level fluxgates either high or low is more at risk when dental surgery is done.

The main reason that the person with uncontrolled diabetes is more at risk is due to the fact that the blood flow to the surgery site can be impaired. Another reason is the fact that antibiotics will need to be taken and when the blood glucose level is not stable this puts the dental patient at a higher risk for the oral complication thrush.

Thrush is one of the complications that is closely associated with diabetes and when there are oral problems this opens the door for this complication after dental surgery.
