Possible Risks to the Unborn Child

The mother that is diagnosed with gestational diabetes will normally recover from the disease after the birth of the baby, but there are some risks that the unborn child can be open too. The baby is also experiencing the same things as the mother while in the womb and this includes diabetes. That means that the infant faces some risks because of this disease including:

  • The baby upon being born can have low blood sugar
  • The child will have a higher risk of type II diabetes
  • There is a possibility of the infant having jaundice within two or three days of birth
  • There is a higher chance of birth defects
  • There is a possibility of the child having breathing difficulties.

The obstetrician and pediatric physician will monitor the child to ensure that there are no symptoms for diabetes after the birth of the child and for the first several years.
