Preventing Thrush


Thrush can be a painful and dangerous condition for a person with diabetes and there are some ways that it can be avoided. The ways of avoiding the onset of thrush begin with staying on a daily diabetes therapy plan, which means eating properly and taking insulin at regulated times daily.

The other tips to avoid developing thrush are following a good oral hygiene practice daily, by brushing the teeth at least twice daily and using floss once per day to keep the mouth, teeth and gums healthy. Do not use mouthwash or mouth sprays as these can destroy the natural balance of microorganisms in the mouth leaving it vulnerable.

Regular visits to the dentist are important especially for the person with diabetes, and the person that wears dentures. The diabetic because they are at risk for thrush if they smoke should quit smoking, this is also good for other health reasons including heart disease, which the diabetic is also at risk for.

The amount of foods containing yeast and sugar should be limited, this includes bread, beer and wine, as they can promote the growth of the microorganisms that can cause the fungal infection in the mouth, also known as candida, thrush and oral yeast infection.
