Who is at Risk for Nerve and Blood Vessel Damage

Diabetics are susceptible to certain complications and one of these is diabetic neuropathy, this condition can have other problems caused because of this condition and its symptoms. these can occur due to prolonged exposure to high blood sugar. This can cause damage to the delicate nerve fibers, and why this occurs is not known for certain.

High blood glucose interferes with the nerves ability to transmit signals and it also can weaken the walls of small blood vessels that supply the nerves with both oxygen and nutrients. There are other factors that can contribute to diabetic neuropathy including:

    • Inflammation in the nerves is one of these factors, and is caused by autoimmune response. This can occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks a part of the body as if it was a foreign object.
    • Smoking and alcohol abuse are other reason the nerves and blood vessels can become damaged or can increase the risk of infection.
    • Genetic factors that can be unrelated to the diabetic condition can be a reason why some diabetics are more susceptible to nerve damage than others.
