Side Effects of Alpha- Glucosidase Inhibitors


The side effects that can plague the diabetic taken oral diabetes medications in the class of alpha-glucosidase medications can be uncomfortable and can cause dehydration if not monitored correctly. This is because this class of medications can cause upset stomach in some diabetics that are prescribed this type of medication to treat type II diabetes.

The stomach upset can cause nausea, cramps, gas and diarrhea, which in excess can cause dehydration. Should diarrhea be one of the side effects while taking this type of oral diabetes medication it is important to notify the physician as this can be dangerous for someone with type II diabetes.

Alpha-glucosidase Inhibitors when prescribed will be monitored by the physician closely to ensure that it works correctly to maintain the blood glucose level and that any side effects are minimal. This monitoring can include tests to check the blood glucose level, organ function and the overall health of the diabetic.
