Symptoms of gestational diabetes.


Gestational diabetes generally does not show up any visible symptoms. Experiences that a woman can have include excessive weight gain, hunger or thirst, excessive urination and vaginal infections. To diagnose the presence of the disease a preliminary glucose screening test is performed between the 26 and the 28 week of pregnancy. The chances are high in case if diabetes is found in her family’s history. Even a woman who has had high blood pressure or any urinary tract infection during previous pregnancy is high at risk or has had a large baby (above 9 pounds) during the last delivery or even a miscarriage. It has been seen that have an origin from African-American or from first nation have a high risk of getting affected. If a woman is obese, having a BMI of over 29, have high chances of contracting the disease. A woman who has had gestational diabetes during the last time she was pregnant have a high risk of being affected. 

A woman with gestational diabetes shows the following symptoms:

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Regular infections of skin, bladder, and vagina.

Gestational diabetes can be avoided if a pregnant woman follows the prescribed diet and tries to keep her weight under normal standards.
