Teens and Diabetes

Teen years are difficult for them and their parents and when diabetes is added into the equation the child must be completely aware of their disease. These are years when there is a lot of activity, parties and even beginning to drive.

Alcohol and drugs can have an immediate and dangerous affect on the blood glucose level and the ability to treat low blood sugar. One of the reasons for this is that it is that the diabetic after drinking may feel as though their blood sugar is low even when it actually is not, and treating the symptoms of low blood glucose when it is either in the normal range or high can be extremely dangerous.

Explain to the teen what affect alcohol or drugs can have on them that they will not have on other teens, beside the high effect that is natural. The teen should understand how dangerous it is for them to drink because of their diabetes, not just because they are under age to legally drink.
