Treatments for Diabetic Coma


There are different treatments that are used for the person that is suffering from a diabetic coma, or that is at risk for going into a coma. The types diabetic comas that can occur are ketoacidotic diabetic coma, hyperosmolar diabetic coma and hypoglycemic coma.

The ketoacidotic diabetic coma is treated with intravenous fluids, insulin, potassium and sodium is also administered to the diabetic patient that is having coma symptoms or has gone into a coma.

Hyperosmolar diabetic comas are treated with a large amount of intravenous fluids, and are also treated as soon as possible with potassium and sodium.

The hypoglycemic diabetic coma is treated by administering hormone glucagon, which will reverse the effects of insulin, or depending on the situation the diabetic could be given glucose intravenously.

The diabetic treatment is done to rehydrate the patient as quickly as can be done safely and at the same time to regulate the blood glucose levels to take the patient out of danger.
