How to Take Glucophage
Age of the patient is the primary factor as far as dosing is considered. Pediatric (between 10 and 16 years of age) type 2 diabetes patients should start Glucophage from 500mg. This dose needs to be taken twice daily. For these patients maximum Glucophage dosage is 2000 mg per day. For patients above 17 years old, doctors may prescribe Glucophage dose of 850 mg twice daily. This dose can be increased up to 2550 mg daily. The increased dose needs to be taken twice or thrice daily. While increasing Glucophage dose, doctors pay attention to improvement shown by the patient and the side effects marked after use of this drug. For patients under insulin treatment, doctors advise an initial dose of 500 mg which can be increased up to 2500 mg. This medicine needs to be taken with meal only. While under this medication, you need to maintain the level of Glucophage in blood. For this purpose, you need to take this medicine at a fixed time every day. While taking this medicine, never chew or crush it. Sallow it whole with a glass of water. You need to consult your doctor if your blood sugar level does not remain constant even after using maximum dose over a month.
